Back in 1990, a group of 100th Bomb Group veterans visited Thorpe Abbotts, and for many it was their first visit to see the Museum. The family of Mike Harvey recently discovered several tapes from his collection featuring short interviews with the veterans, and those tapes have been digitized for the first time. 100th Bomb Group veteran Jack Spencer was determined to make it to our reunion this year, where he planned to sing the national anthem. Sadly, we lost Jack on April 6th at the age of 98. The Spencer family recently discovered an audio recording of Jack rehearsing, and we thought this would be a fitting way to start off our reunion week. The very end of the recording was cut off, but we modified it to add a fitting ending. Jack Spencer will be with us in spirit in Savannah. | 100th Bomb Group Fou

During his time with the 100th Bomb Group, Col. Thomas S. Jeffrey emphasized the importance of keeping a tight formation during combat missions. Jeffrey oversaw numerous practice missions where crews harnessed their skills flying in formation. These rare images were all taken during one of those practice missions in July 1944, and the audio of Jeffrey is from an interview he gave in 1997. 80 years ago today, Sgt. Herb Leaverton from the 100th Bomb Group Photo Section was in London at the Guildhall, and recorded this incredible color footage of Supreme Allied Commander Dwight Eisenhower after he was awarded the Honorary Freedom of the City of London. Eisenhower drove through cheering crowds to the Guildhall that day, and he was joined by Winston Churchill, who can also be seen in this footage. In 1962, Dr. John Clark became one of the very first 100th Bomb Group veterans to return to Thorpe Abbotts. John and his wife Marie rented a car in London, and plotted out their journey on a map. John was able to successfully locate his old base and he stood atop the control tower, which was filled with straw at the time. This rare color footage was recently restored and digitized by film technicians, and is being shown here for the first time in nearly 80 years. During the Christmas season of 1944 at Thorpe Abbotts, the veterans of the Hundredth experienced very wintry conditions. On November 30, 1943, Robert Rosenthal’s crew flew their 9th combat mission, targeting German aircraft engine production in Solingen. 18 aircraft from the Hundredth took part in the mission, and all returned safely. In mid-November 1944, F/O Hubert E. Trent returned to Thorpe Abbotts after evading capture for more than a year. Trent served as the co-pilot for Harold “Pinky” Helstrom’s crew in the 350th Bomb Squadron and their aircraft went down during the mission to Hanau on October 4, 1943. Trent, along with three other members of the crew, were able to successfully evade capture thanks to help from members of the French Resistance, and they ultimately crossed into Spain and were transported back to Englan

Today we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Regensburg shuttle mission that took place on August 17, 1943. Crews from the Hundredth targeted German aircraft production in Regensburg, Germany and encountered an onslaught of attacks from the German Luftwaffe. Nine aircraft from the group were lost that day.
