The Queensboro Bridge, also known as the 59th Street Bridge, connects Manhattan and Queens over the East River. Designed by Gustav Lindenthal and Henry Hornbostel, construction began in 1901 and the bridge opened on March 30, 1909, costing about $18 million. This cantilever bridge, spanning 1,182 feet, was a major engineering feat, carrying vehicles, pedestrians, and trolleys (later replaced by trains).
