Since 1984, Buffalo Zoo has been highly involved in the breeding, raising, and care of the critically endangered Puerto Rican crested toad, and was one of the first zoos to be part of a reintroduction effort. As a result, every couple of years we breed and release tadpoles into the wild along with partner zoos and the Puerto Rican Crested Toad Conservancy. Earlier this month, we sent 4,885 critically endangered Puerto Rican Crested Toad tadpoles to be released in Puerto Rico, in partnership with the Puerto Rican Crested Toad Conservancy. This species is the only toad native to Puerto Rico, and our conservation efforts are helping bring the population back! Hop on by for some toad-ally awesome conservation news! 🐸 Earlier this month, our Herpetology team successfully bred and shipped 1,200 Puerto Rican crested toad tadpoles for release back into their native habitats! It is the only native toad in Puerto Rico and is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN.
